Red Cross Report from Haiti recommending biogas (July 2010)

January 29, 2011

In the top ten messages of a special report from Haiti in July 2010 ” From sustaining lives to sustainable solutions: the challenge of sanitation – 6 months on”  the Red Cross is urging the international community to take sanitation seriously and to “recognize sanitation as one of the absolute priorities in Haiti’s reconstruction, and to ensure that sufficient resources are devoted to it.”

They are also calling for innovative solutions for future sanitation provision: “…research is needed into potential solutions such as small bore sewerage, large-scale composting of waste, or establishing biogas production.”

The Red Cross is now researching with expert partners about different ways of including biogas into its shelter modules.

The report can be found here.

Dear friends, Brazilian NGO OIA (O Instituto Ambiental) founded in 1992 with the support of Dr. Michael Braungart, Dr. George Chan, Dr. Katia Hansen and the late Brazilian environment minister José Lutzenberger, has been working with integrated biosystems, including biogas production in Haiti even before the earthquake. We are working under the auspices of Brazilian NGO “Viva Rio”, and are proceeding strongly with our work. You can check a video filmed by UN staff in Haiti @:
