The emergency housing project (Formens Hus, Sweden and Stichting IKEA Foundation, The Netherlands)

February 17, 2011
New interesting projects emerge to make emergency shelters more effective and innovative. One of them is “The emergency shelter project” run by Formens Hus in Sweden.

The idea is to bring a sustainable transitional shelter solution to the market which significantly improves the lives of the 40 million people displaced by conflicts and natural disasters.

The project aims to identify, design and commercialize a sustainable solution which brings access to shelter, clean water, energy and cooking for people displaced by conflict and natural disasters.

This is done by a clear user focus on end user needs. A straight forward collaboration process with industry, humanitarian and academic partners. A rational product development and by adapting product design to production conditions.

The project is divided into 4 modules:
  1. Shelter: Development and manufacturing of a modularised transitional shelter
  2. Energy: Decentralised energy solutions which enable cooking and water purification without the use of fossil fuels and established infrastructure
  3. Water: Purification and storage of water
  4. Sanitation: Decentralised sanitary solutions which prevent pollution and contamination

The project is managed by the Formens Hus Foundation in Hällefors, Sweden, in partnership with The Stiching Ikea Foundation, the Netherlands.

The project is supported by Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg, Sweden and has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding of collaboration with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to give input into the sanitation systems of the shelter.
